The Taste of Mercy
The invitation being offered to us opens up a world of surprise, uncontrollability, and ever-widening tables. This meal, this communion, is the most lively fellowship you can participate in. Its culture is not stagnant or decadent. It feels eccentric, resonant, and human. This scares most of us because we have become accustomed to worlds that are expected, manageable, and increasingly narrow.
Jesus escapes every box we try to put him in. He is never caught in a corner, never domesticated, never contained. This doesn’t stop us from trying to find the right box, of course. We try one box after another, one framework after another. But he always surprises and eludes. He keeps us on our toes. He crucifies and makes alive.
