Providence Haunts
Providence haunts. It lingers in our literature and poetry. When we look back, it stalks our very lives. However, the pressures at work in our imaginations, social and personal, will continue make it difficult to identify the hand of God. Easy articulations of meaning and purpose will keep slipping away, lost in this secular and scientific age. But providence persists in stubborn and perplexing ways.

Constructing a Reformed Poetic
“Nearly all the wisdom we possess, that is to say, true and sound wisdom, consists in two parts: the knowledge of God and of ourselves. But, while joined by many bonds, which one precedes and brings for the other is not easy to discern.” This mutual knowledge of God and man, which I take to be original to Calvin and therefore Reformed theology, is the foundation of a Reformed poetic in that it forms a particular way of thinking and speaking that in turn produces a doxologic way of life and doing theology.
Confessing Scripture Theologically
So our patterns of reading must be patient, careful, and unashamedly theological. Such readings are prayerfully dependent on the Spirit to illumine what he has inspired, as fire finds fire.
Sacramental Theology in a Secular Age
Such a view is by necessity non-sacramental, as it denies that the finite can retain its substance while being joined with the infinite. The Protestant understanding of the sacraments is one where the elements remain elements even while the Lord’s presence is in them. The bread does not utterly transform into the body of Christ, it remains bread even as it has the real presence of Christ’s body.
